I sincerely think that both, the movie and book are amazing. As other books and movies, I think that this movie is loyal to the original book of Romeo and Juliet. Even though there are many versions, the movie and book we saw and read are very similar. However, I have to accept that they are not identical. The book by one way is written in an antique age and by the other way, the movie is filmed in modern time. This somehow affects the content of each, because things, actions, and ways of thinking are shown differently according to what time they are talking about. For example, in the book, every death that happens violently is caused by a sword. But in the movie, the swords are replaced by guns. However, there are some point of views that forgetting on what age they are, they stay the same. For example, Lord Capulet is bipolar in both, the movie and book. He at first thinks that Juliet is young and he wants her to choose who to marry with. But later, he decides for her making her marry Paris. Another big difference is that in the book, the most important theme is the love of Romeo and Juliet against everything else. But in the movie, the violence due to the family feud against everything is the most shown. Both of them, contained the other universal topics such as family, violence and marriage that somehow leave an impact in the public and which leads to the remaking of this story in many ways.
I preferred the movie version of this story, because it showed a modern life. Since it was made in recent days, it was more believable and easier to understand since the language was like a more evolved English. It also showed universal themes that made me connect to my own life and society. For example, love is present every days of our lives and in the others´ that surround us. Marriage is happening daily and it affects positively or negatively whoever is marrying. For example, Romeo and Juliet loved each other and married against their parents will, this was happy for both of them but somehow it was going to affect them negatively in a future. Violence is present every day at ever time. People in the streets are robbing, killing or even hurting people for their own benefit without being conscious of their acts. In the movie, Tybalt kills Mercutio and then Romeo kills Tybalt for revenge. They see death as a normal thing to do like many other people in my society. The character of the movie were also shown in an exaggerate way that helped us define quickly and immediately what they actually were and why they acted the way they did. For example Mercutio was shown as a very funny, uncontrolled and gay person who looked drugged every time. In the book, he was just described as a rude guy. What I loved the most is that with the book, we read and just imagined how each thing and character was, but with the movie, we get a chance to see if we guessed correctly. Watching the movie was like 'the moment of the truth' because I personally was paying a lot of attention to see what the movie had deleted from the book and what it had added. For example, in the movie, the nurse gives Romeo a ring from Juliet at the moment that he gets exiled for him to remember her. In the book this doesn't happen. By seeing the movie, I got disappointments and surprises. For example, I was impressed on how the most important themes were shown. In the movie, they concentrated more on the feud, because the hate between both families, Montagues and Capulets was present till the end leading to every other situation that happened. But in the book, the love between Juliet and Romeo was developed the most throughout the whole story. For these reasons, I enjoyed more the movie that the book even-though they are very similar to each other.
