The Hobbit
The book The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit that lives very happy in his comfortable hobbit hole. One day, the wizard Gandalf came to his hole to invite him to join an adventure. Bilbo declines the invitation and invites Gandalf to come over for some tea the next day. However, in the morning Gandalf arrived with 13 dwarves, again to ask Bilbo to join the adventure. Bilbo was not looking out for leaving his comfy hole and neither seeking for an outside adventure, but Gandalf and the dwarves convinced him. Before the next morning, they left the house and started the journey. The dwarves told Bilbo that their mission was to reclaim their ancestors' treasure that was in the hands of Smaug the dragon. Their journey started out kind of well, but it didn't last for long. On their way to the Lonely Mountain, they needed to overcome huge trolls, receive advices from the wise Elrond, cross the Misty Mountains, be the prisoners of goblins, being trapped in tunnels, suffer of hunger and coldness, and even left Bilbo behind. While the group was trying to get out of the cave, Bilbo finds a ring and keeps it. On his way out of the tunnel, he encounters Gollum who wants to eat him, but he discovers that his ring makes him invisible, so he uses it. He finally escaped it and catches up the group. After that, Bilbo, the dwarves, and Gandalf had many more obstacles in their way. The Wargs which were wolves chased them, but they were saved by the friendly eagles. Then, during the Mirkwood forest they got trapped in gigantic spider webs, and got kidnapped by the wood elves. However, Bilbo saved them from these events with his magic ring. They finally arrive to Lake Town and saw Smaug sleeping with the treasure. Bilbo tried to provoke him by stealing from him, so Smaug was now very furious. Having in mind these difficulties they've overcome, would Bilbo be enough strong to kill Smaug and recuperate the dwarves' treasure?
While I was reading, I could identify some interesting and fundamental elements of the story. Something very particular about Tolkien, is that he uses a deep description of every events on his books that allows the reader to picture in his mind what is exactly happening. Since I started reading The Hobbit, I saw that it was very descriptive. Another interesting element are the dialogues. In The Hobbit, when the characters talk, they do it in a poetic or singing way. So there are many intermediate songs or rhymes between paragraphs that helps the reader also understand what they are saying in a very creative and fun way. By the other hand, there's a unique elves' language that creates a little bit of confusion, but if you concentrate, you will immediately get it and understand it. Also, if you've read other books by Tolkien, you will automatically figure out what they are saying. I think that these are the 3 main elements that the book contains, and the three of them contributes to a better understanding from the reader towards the story.
I sincerely loved this book. I thought it was amazingly described because in every situation or event, I could imagine exactly in my head what was happening. I adore the books that have deep descriptions because I concentrate more and I sincerely understand the whole story better. I think that the whole plot is absolutely interesting and all the obstacles that Bilbo and the dwarves need to overcome in their journey are very well thought and explained by the author. I will definitely recommend this book not only to kids, but also to a teenager or adult that like books that are well described. Because if you are someone who thinks that many descriptions bores you, you should definitely not read The Hobbit. However, I am pretty sure that someone who loves reading books of fantasy combined with adventure will feel trapped by the epic story of The Hobbit. I think I just loved this book because everything that happens is fictional and does realm to the impossible, but I like a lot the literature, because in the literature, nothing is impossible, you can free your mind and write about what you just want. For me, the amazing ideas that Tolkien had, built this magnificent story where I got lost. I couldn't stop reading it, just because it is one of the best books I've ever read in my life.
